Parish Council  Meeting Minutes 8/18/14

Present: Rich, Norman, Chuck,Pat,Jacqueline, Lynette, Edward, Adrienne  Absent: Gilda, Art

1. Religious Ed. Update:

Jacqueline reported organizing meeting was held 8/17/14. It was well attended by 7 families. Looks like there will be a good size First Communion class and 1-2 confirmation candidates.

Plan: Teacher recruitment is on-going. There will be 1-2 classes per month taught by teams of 2. Classes start 10/9/14.

2. Religious Ed. request for director stipend:

Request was denied for 2 reasons. The program is small and we hoped it could be run by volunteers . The new archdiocesan guidelines for salaries would prohibit it. (note: In a subsequent discussion with Dave Freitas , he  agreed a stipend would not be permitted) A budget for materials and books was approved and sent to Finance Committee for appropriations.

Judy Morrow was informed and asked to send a proposal to Dave who has told Adrienne that monies have been approved.

3. Hall Painting Project:

All bids are in. Lowest is $7300. Council has approved the go ahead on painting the hall. Adrienne notified Dave Freitas ahead of Finance Committee meeting 8/19/14 of the approval and their need to decide on how to fund it.

4. SJOG Prayer and Poem:

Rich presented the beautiful framed calligraphies ready for mounting in the church. He will contact Phil to help hand them.

5. Archbishop’s Pastoral Visit:

A delay until 2015 was requested given the change in pastors. Norman will contact the chancery to arrange a visit during Lent. Will propose one “Bishop’s: Mass at 10:30 on a Sunday.

6. Hospital Ministry Update:

The lock to the closet in the meditation room has been changed and lives at the info desk to the left of the room. Pat spoke with Peter Clark. He will arrange a Eucharistic ministers/Interns/chaplains get together. He is looking for a new secretary but it may take time. Meanwhile, our contact is Rev. Susan Conrad, 885-7785. Problems still persist in getting patient lists out consistently.

Reminder to get flu shot at they become available,?beginning of October.

7. Deacon Brian’s participation at SJOG:

Brian is welcome to attend Mass and be part of the community but there is no need for a deacon at this time. Norman will communicate this to the chancery.

8. Fundraiser: Norman proposed a fundraising concert that he would organize to be held in the hall or church 4/11/15. He will discuss it at the Finance Committee 8/19/14.

9. Possible Town Hall Meeting:

Need a reason to call a meeting. Rich will talk to Dave Freitas to see if Finance thinks there is a need to discuss money with the congregation.

We will write a “State of the Parish” document listing our achievements, on-going projects and what we plan to do. This was done last year. We will brainstorm the content at our Nov. meeting. Finished document to be ready by Feb.

10. Lenten Soup & Scripture:

We will begin planning at next meeting.

11. Norman’s Anniversary of Ordination:

Addendum: An online vote was taken subsequent to the meeting of 8/18/14 to asses the Council members’ opinions regarding source of funding for painting of the hall.

The results were unanimous, with one abstention, to authorize the Finance Committee to use savings to pay for hall painting and to create a fundraising plan to replenish monies used.
